About the Tada Family Residence Storage Shed
The Tada Family Residence Storage Shed (多田家住宅物置, Tada-ke Jūtaku Monooki) is a small shed built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 6.6 square meters.
It is the smallest of the 18 registered structures on the estate, and stands on the east boundary, south of the target house with the service gate between them.
A Shed for Firewood from the Hill
The Agency for Cultural Affairs says the Tada Storage Shed held firewood and brushwood gathered on the hill behind the estate. The west front is left open, with no wall, and the other 3 sides are earthen walls, so bundles could be carried straight in.
It measures 3.4 by 1.9 meters under a gabled kirizuma roof. A shed this modest still shows how the household drew its fuel from the slope behind it.
Left-Hand Pantiles
The roof of the Tada Family Residence Storage Shed is laid with hidari-sangawara (左桟瓦), which the Agency describes as the tile used in this district. These are pantiles made to overlap in the opposite direction from standard pantiles.
The same tiles cover the east slope of the neighboring service gate and the earthen wall around the estate. Notice which way the tiles lap, and you can see a local trait shared across the Tada buildings.
Why It Was Registered
The Storage Shed qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape; the Agency calls it simply built. That a firewood shed survives and was registered alongside the big storehouses and reception rooms helps show the whole working life of the estate.
Seeing the Storage Shed
The Tada Family Residence Storage Shed is on the east boundary, south of the service gate; how it appears from outside on that side has not been confirmed.
