About the Tada Family Residence Rear Gate
The Tada Family Residence Rear Gate (多田家住宅裏門, Tada-ke Jūtaku Uramon) is a gate built around 1872 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a timber Yakuimon with a tiled roof, 2.1 meters wide.
It stands in the middle of the east boundary of the estate. Among the 18 registered structures, only the long storehouse and front storehouse are older.
Where the Hita Road Once Ran
The Agency for Cultural Affairs passes on a tradition about the Tada Rear Gate: the Hita Kaidō (日田街道), the road that now runs in front of the estate, is said to have passed the spot where this gate stands until the early Meiji years. The gate is associated with that story.
The Hita Kaidō was one of the Edo-period routes from Chikuzen to Hita, in Bungo Province, which the shogunate governed directly. While the road ran along the east side of the estate, this was where property and highway met. After the road moved and the front of the estate turned south, the gate stayed to mark where the old road had been.
Double Board Doors with a Wicket
The Tada Family Residence Rear Gate has a gabled roof of pantiles, and a pair of board doors hung between its posts, one with a wicket door. Like the front gate it is a yakuimon, but at 2.1 meters it is a size smaller than the front gate's 2.9 meters.
Why It Was Registered
The Rear Gate qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency values it as a commemorative gate that records how the estate changed. Its worth lies less in the structure than in the history of the spot where it stands, which makes it a different kind of entry among the 18.
