About the Tada Family Residence Target House
The Tada Family Residence Target House (多田家住宅的場, Tada-ke Jūtaku Matoba) is a small shelter for archery targets built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 7.9 square meters.
It faces west, directly across from the archery hall, and held the targets at which the archers in that hall shot.
A Tiny Front with Temple-Style Timbers
The front of the Tada Target House is left open, spanned at lintel height by a Kōryō, a curved tie beam. On top of the beam and on the corner posts sit Funahijiki, simple boat-shaped brackets that carry the purlins of the roof.
Both are members more often seen on shrines and temples. Using them on a shed 2 meters deep is what makes the Tada Family Residence Target House worth a look; the target is framed almost like a picture.
Cedar-Bark Walls
The other 3 sides are earthen walls with Japanese cedar bark fixed along the lower part. The Tada Family Residence Target House measures 4 by 2 meters under a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles.
Closing the back with earth walls also serves to stop stray arrows. Open toward the archery hall and closed on the other 3 sides, the building's form follows its job.
Why It Was Registered
The Target House qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that with the archery hall it adds character to the estate. Of the 18 registered structures, only the storage shed is smaller.
Seeing the Target House
The Tada Family Residence Target House stands toward the north end of the east boundary, just north of the service gate; whether it can be seen from outside on that side has not been confirmed.
