About the Tada Family Residence Service Gate
The Tada Family Residence Service Gate (多田家住宅勝手門, Tada-ke Jūtaku Kattemon) is a gate built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a timber Udekimon with a tiled roof, 2.0 meters wide.
A kattemon is a side gate for kitchen traffic and everyday errands. The Tada Service Gate stands toward the north end of the east boundary, between the target house and the storage shed.
A Simple Bracket-Arm Gate
An udekimon is a plain gate in which arms project from the tops of 2 posts to carry the roof. The Tada Family Residence Service Gate has a pair of board doors hung between its posts under a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles.
The front and rear gates are the more formal Yakuimon type; the service gate is the lighter udekimon. The difference in rank matches the difference in use.
Left-Hand Tiles on the Outer Slope
The thing to look at on the Tada Family Residence Service Gate is the roof. Its east slope, the one facing out from the estate, is laid with hidari-sangawara (左桟瓦), the pantile used in this district, which laps in the opposite direction from the standard kind.
The short walls on the north and south sides of the gate are roofed with the same tiles. Finishing the outward face in the local tile suggests attention to how the estate looked from outside.
Why It Was Registered
The Service Gate qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the gate and its walls, with their left-hand tiles, give the estate a character particular to the region.
