About the Tada Family Residence Earthen Wall
The Tada Family Residence Earthen Wall (多田家住宅土塀, Tada-ke Jūtaku Dobei) is a plastered, tile-capped wall built around 1933 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, repaired in the mid-Showa years (1946 to 1965), and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a timber-framed wall with a tiled roof, 106 meters long in total.
It is the longest of the 18 registered structures, and its registration number, 40-0102, closes the Tada series.
106 Meters Winding Through the Estate
The Tada Earthen Wall zigzags around the enclosure southeast of the main house and between the outbuildings on the northeast side of the grounds. It is not a single ring around the property but a set of walls dividing the estate into compounds.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the south face of the barn is designed as one with the wall running east and west, and short lengths of wall flank the service gate too. Buildings and walls run into each other to shape the compounds of the estate.
Stone Footing, Plaster, and Two Kinds of Base
The Tada Family Residence Earthen Wall stands on a footing of flat stones, with walls of lime plaster. The lower part is faced in places with Japanese cedar bark and elsewhere with sasarako shitami, horizontal overlapping boards held by notched vertical battens that give the surface a fine ripple of shadow.
The coping is a gabled kirizuma roof of pantiles, using the left-hand tiles of this district. White plaster and tile, with bark and board at the base, carry on for 106 meters through the estate.
Why It Was Registered
The Earthen Wall qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency says it gives the estate a calm and settled atmosphere. Repaired after the war, it still holds the compound divisions laid out in the early Showa years.
Seeing the Earthen Wall
The Tada Family Residence Earthen Wall runs mostly inside the property, and how much of it can be seen from the road to the south has not been confirmed. The sections beside the service gate face the east boundary, but their visibility from outside is also unconfirmed.
