About the Tada Family Residence Main House
The Tada Family Residence Main House (多田家住宅主屋, Tada-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) is a large farmhouse built in 1890 in Moriyama, Chikuzen-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It is a timber building, mostly single-story with a partial 2nd floor, under a tiled roof, and covers 337 square meters.
It is the centerpiece of an estate from which 18 structures were registered together. The house stands near the middle of the plot facing south, and its registration number, 40-0085, heads the Tada series.
A Tall Earth-Floored Hall and Two Rows of Rooms
The roof is a hip-and-gable irimoya roof laid with pantiles. The western part of the Tada Main House is a Doma, an earth-floored work area left open to the rafters, with no ceiling. East of it, on raised wooden floors, the living rooms are laid out in two rows, so the building divides cleanly between work space and living space.
At the south end of the eastern row a 10-mat reception room juts forward. That projection bends the plan into an L, a layout the Agency for Cultural Affairs records as kagi-zashiki (鍵座敷), "key-shaped reception room" type. From the front, the jutting room steps the outline of the house and gives the south face depth.
A Plastered South-West Face
What catches the eye outside is the south-west face of the Tada Family Residence Main House, sealed in white lime plaster with no timber showing. The Agency describes the effect as heavy and dignified, and it is the side a guest faced on coming through the front gate.
The Front Storehouse of 1870 stands against the west side of the house. The Agency says the two together make an imposing front, and the white plaster of the house beside the tiled lower walls of the storehouse is the face the estate shows its visitors.
Why the Main House Was Registered
The Main House qualified for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency sums it up as a large farmhouse with a dignified bearing.
Set against the other 17 registered structures, it follows the late Edo long storehouse and the front storehouse and rear gate of the early Meiji years. The detached house came in 1902, and the retirement house and most outbuildings around 1933. The Tada Main House is the building that fixed the shape of the estate in the middle of the Meiji era.
Seeing the Tada Main House
No public openings or tours of the Tada Family Residence, including the Main House, had been announced as of September 2026. The house stands in the middle of the grounds, behind the front gate and stone wall on the road to the south, and how much of it can be seen from outside has not been confirmed. There is no guidance on photography either, so if you take pictures from the road, leave the household's daily life out of them.
