A notice board stand beside the first torii

The Yahiko Shrine Notice Board Stand (彌彦神社制札台, Iyahiko Jinja Seisatsudai) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the small timber structure in front of and to the left of the First Torii Gate of Yahiko Shrine, built in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0023). A seisatsu is an official notice board carrying rules or announcements, and this is the stand that displays it.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a timber structure with a copper-sheet roof. It stands on a stone base inside a wooden fence, 1.35 metres between posts and about 3 metres to the ridge, with Udeki arms projecting from the posts to carry a gabled copper roof.

Small but finely detailed

It is built of hinoki cypress, and the arms are supported by Funahijiki brackets and bearing blocks. The Agency calls it small in scale but high in quality, and giving a notice board the same detailing as the halls shows how the rebuilding treated the precinct as a whole.

The shrine name pillar stands on the other side of the gate, so the vermilion torii is framed by the notice board stand and the name pillar, a composition planned to give the entrance its form.

Seeing it

The Yahiko Shrine Notice Board Stand is to the left of the First Torii Gate and can be seen at any time. Stop before the gate and look left for the small roof inside its fence.

Up close, you can see the brackets and bearing blocks set under the projecting arms. Though only about 3 metres high, its curved roof and detailing are as careful as any hall.
