A main hall with the mountain at its back

The Yahiko Shrine Main Hall (彌彦神社本殿, Iyahiko Jinja Honden) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the sanctuary of Yahiko Shrine, rebuilt in 1916 after a fire in 1912 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02. Its registration number, 15-0003, is the first of the 25 at the shrine.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 26 square metres. When the shrine was rebuilt, the buildings were moved so that they stand with Mount Yahiko directly behind them, and the main hall kept the nagare-zukuri form of its predecessor: a gabled roof whose front slope sweeps forward over the entrance. The shrine and Yahiko Village describe it as three bays wide, with a Kōhai porch, a railed veranda and wing screens.

Ito Chuta and the Meiji Shrine metalwork

The Agency credits the design to Itō Chūta of Tokyo Imperial University and Kiriyama Heitarō, with Okumoto Goichi supervising the work. The ornamental metal fittings were designed by a team from the Meiji Shrine construction bureau that included Ōe Shintarō. Itō was the leading figure in modern Japanese shrine architecture.

A stone corridor links the back of the offering hall to the main hall, and the mizugaki fence encloses it. The worship hall, norito hall, offering hall and main hall form a single line, with the Yahiko Shrine Main Hall at the far end, closest to the mountain.

Seeing it

The Yahiko Shrine Main Hall stands inside the mizugaki fence, and visitors worship at the front of the worship hall; the shrine gives no information about access within the fence. Looking past the worship hall, you can make out the copper roof of the main hall beyond the offering hall, with the green slope of Mount Yahiko above it.

Because the hall is seen only from a distance, it helps to know what to look for: the long front slope of the roof that carries on over the porch, and the metal fittings, which belong to the same generation of work as Meiji Shrine.
