Quarters for the priests on duty
The Yahiko Shrine Shikojo Attendants' Hall (彌彦神社伺候所, Iyahiko Jinja Shikōjo) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 hall behind the worship hall on the right at Yahiko Shrine, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0009). The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as the place where priests stay on night duty.
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 73 square metres. A covered passage joins it to the norito hall, and at the far end a stair leads down to the forecourt. Inside are a 10-mat room with an alcove and a 12-mat room, fronted by a veranda with a Kōran railing.
A matching pair behind the worship hall
From outside, the Yahiko Shrine Shikojo looks almost identical to the food offering hall on the other side. Matching the two buildings gives the rear of the shrine a symmetrical frame around the worship hall, though one is a kitchen and the other a duty room.
According to the shrine, the prayer hall continues to the north beyond the attendants' hall, and the prayer reception is to the right of the worship hall, so this side of the complex has long been where the priests work.
Seeing it
The interior of the Yahiko Shrine Shikojo is not open. From the front of the worship hall, look behind and to the right to see its railed veranda.
Compare it with the food offering hall on the left: the roofs and the railings follow the same design. Requests for formal prayers are made at the counter on the right of the worship hall.
