A worship hall under a cusped gable
The Yahiko Shrine Worship Hall (彌彦神社拝殿, Iyahiko Jinja Haiden) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the hall where visitors pray at Yahiko Shrine, rebuilt in 1916 after the fire of 1912 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0006).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 165 square metres. It is 9 bays by 5 under an irimoya hip-and-gable roof, entered from the gable end (Tsumairi), with a porch under a cusped kara-hafu gable that gives the front its emphasis. The food offering hall and attendants' hall flank it at the rear.
A pillar-free hall by a modern architect
Inside, a great Kōryō tie beam runs the length of the hall so that no posts interrupt the floor; during prayers, large groups of worshippers sit in rows here.
The Agency calls the building a fine example of shrine architecture by a modern architect. Itō Chūta kept to traditional shrine forms while planning the structure and layout as an architect of his time, and the front, a gabled hip roof with a cusped porch set over it, looms large as worshippers come up through the grounds.
