A pair of guardian dogs designed by Ito Chuta
The Yahiko Shrine Guardian Dogs (彌彦神社狛犬, Iyahiko Jinja Komainu) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, are the pair of stone komainu set before what was once the third torii of Yahiko Shrine, now the Zuishinmon gate; carved in 1916, they were registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0027). They stand 2.1 metres high.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that the design was drawn by Itō Chūta, architect of the shrine buildings, and the model made by the sculptor Shinkai Taketarō. They were carved by Sakai Hachiemon, a noted Tokyo stonemason, and the Agency counts them among his finest works.
Legs braced, lean and alert
According to the Agency, they belong to the type with legs braced straight, common at shrines of the shōkonsha lineage built to honour the war dead. They are slender, with keen, alert faces. Unlike the crouching guardian dogs of the Edo period, they stand with forelegs straight and chests out, a modern figure.
An architect drawing the design, a sculptor making the model and a mason carving the stone was a division of labour typical of modern shrine building. That the architect of the halls also designed the guardian dogs shows how the whole precinct was planned as one work.
Seeing them
The Yahiko Shrine Guardian Dogs stand before the Zuishinmon gate and can be seen at any time. The gate was built in 1940, so the dogs are older; they first guarded the third torii.
Walk round to the side to see the straight line of the forelegs and the tension of the slim bodies, and check whether one has its mouth open and the other closed.
