A gabled link between offering hall and worship hall

The Yahiko Shrine Norito Hall (彌彦神社祝詞舎, Iyahiko Jinja Noritosha) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 hall between the offering hall and the worship hall of Yahiko Shrine, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0005). Norito are the prayers that priests recite before the deity, and this is where they do so.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 66 square metres. The gabled roof runs its ridge straight into the ridge of the offering hall at one end and tucks into the gable of the worship hall roof at the other. Doorways on either side lead to the food offering hall and the Shikojo attendants' hall.

Two tiers of tie beams

Inside, a great Kōryō tie beam spans the length of the hall, and two further tiers of cross beams sit on it, leaving the roof structure exposed instead of hidden behind a ceiling. The arrangement clears the floor of posts, on the same principle as the great beam of the worship hall. The Agency notes that the floor was originally laid with tatami.

Resting each end of the roof on a neighbouring hall makes the three buildings read as one. The gable of the Yahiko Shrine Norito Hall bridges the step between the tall worship hall and the lower, curved roof of the offering hall.

Seeing it

The interior of the Yahiko Shrine Norito Hall can only be seen by those taking part in formal prayers in the worship hall, booked from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; photography and recording inside are not allowed.

From outside, stand before the worship hall and look over its roof to catch the gable of the norito hall behind it, its ridge running straight into that of the offering hall.
