The musicians' quarters beside the stage

The Yahiko Shrine Gakusha Musicians' Hall (彌彦神社楽舎, Iyahiko Jinja Gakusha) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 building beside the dance hall of Yahiko Shrine where the musicians who accompany kagura wait and play, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0016).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of 58 square metres. It has an entrance on the east and tatami inside. To the left of the opening onto the bridge corridor, on the stage side, a raised platform one bay deep and the size of 6 mats serves as the musicians' seat.

Plainer by design

The Agency notes that the Gakusha is deliberately plainer than the dance hall: a stone base, Funahijiki brackets, widely spaced single rafters and a Sangawara-buki tiled roof, against the stage's rounded plinth, bracketed railing, fan rafters and copper roof.

The difference in rank between the stage and the musicians' room is spelled out in materials and detail. The kagura is danced to music sent from the raised platform, and the two buildings are joined by the bridge corridor.

Seeing it

The interior of the Yahiko Shrine Gakusha is not open. It is seen from the path, behind the dance hall on the right.

Look at it alongside the dance hall and compare the roofs, copper against tile, and the bases, rounded against stacked stone, to see the contrast the Agency describes. On kagura days, music is played from its raised platform.
