A stone bridge over the Mitarashi stream
The Yahiko Shrine Stone Bridge (彌彦神社石橋, Iyahiko Jinja Ishibashi) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the stone beam bridge over the Mitarashi stream just inside the First Torii Gate of Yahiko Shrine, built in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0026).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a span of 4.5 metres. For the width, its structural entry says 6.4 metres while its description says 5.4 metres, so the record is inconsistent. The deck is made of 7 stone slabs laid as a gently arched taikobashi, with a one-bay wing railing at each end.
Railings carved from single stones
Each railing, posts, base, bracket blocks and top rail together, is carved from a single stone, translating the parts of a timber Kōran railing directly into stone. A seamless stone railing like this takes a great deal of work.
Upstream stands the Tama-no-hashi, the bridge reserved for the deity, which stood in front of the worship hall before the fire. Worshippers cross the stone bridge while the deity's bridge spans the stream above it.
Seeing it
The Yahiko Shrine Stone Bridge is part of the approach and can be crossed at any time; the path turns to stone just past the First Torii Gate. Before crossing, look at a railing from the side to see that it is cut from one block.
Stop on the bridge and look upstream to the Tama-no-hashi. The gentle arch of the deck shows best from the bank, not from on top.
