An open stage for sacred dance
The Yahiko Shrine Dance Hall (彌彦神社舞殿, Iyahiko Jinja Maiden) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the stage on which kagura dances are offered to the deity of Yahiko Shrine, rebuilt in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0015). The Agency for Cultural Affairs reads the name maiden; the shrine calls it buden.
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a bridge corridor, a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 33 square metres. It stands to the right, halfway along the approach to the worship hall, below the terrace of subsidiary shrines. On a rounded plinth, a bracketed Kōran railing runs round a stage open on all four sides, and a bridge corridor reaches it from the musicians' hall next door.
Fan rafters set it apart
The roof is hip-and-gable. The Agency notes that this is the only building in the grounds with fan rafters, which radiate from the corners so that the underside of the eaves opens like a fan, setting it apart from the rest.
Its neighbour, the musicians' hall, is deliberately plainer, with a stone base, Funahijiki brackets and a tiled roof, so that the stage reads as the more important building. With the Sanshuden assembly hall, the three form one set for performing, accompanying and watching kagura.
Seeing it
The shrine says the full programme of 13 kagura pieces is performed on 18 April at the festival of Tsumado no Ōkami, with one or two pieces on Saturdays in spring and autumn; with the stage open on all sides, the dances can be watched from the path.
At other times the Yahiko Shrine Dance Hall can be seen from outside whenever you visit. Look up under the eaves to see the radiating fan rafters, and note where the bridge corridor from the musicians' hall joins the stage.
