A votive hall under triangular gables
The Yahiko Shrine Ema Hall (彌彦神社絵馬殿, Iyahiko Jinja Emaden) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 hall at Yahiko Shrine where votive pictures and plaques are hung, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0022).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of 132 square metres. It stands a little back from the path, before the ablution pavilion. Its defining feature is a curved hip-and-gable roof with rounded edges, set with Chidori-hafu triangular gables at front and back.
Plaques from the sports ground next door
The Agency notes that the hall holds prize plaques from competitions held at the athletics ground that once adjoined the shrine, now a keirin cycle-racing track, recording one side of the shrine's activity. The plaques tie the shrine to local events, not only to prayers and thanks.
The pair of triangular gables gives a long, low building a clear front, and as one of the larger buildings beside the approach it helps shape the scene.
Seeing it
The Yahiko Shrine Ema Hall stands a little back from the path before the ablution pavilion, and can be seen from outside at any time; look for the triangular gables rising from the front and back of the roof.
Among the plaques, look for those recording competition prizes; their dates and events hint at the years when a sports ground lay right next to the shrine.
