A second nagare-zukuri roof before the sanctuary
The Yahiko Shrine Offering Hall (彌彦神社幣殿, Iyahiko Jinja Heiden) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the innermost of the halls in front of the sanctuary of Yahiko Shrine, rebuilt in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0004).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 28 square metres. Inside it is laid with tatami, and in plan it runs on without a break from the norito hall and worship hall. From outside, though, it takes the same three-bay nagare-zukuri form as the main hall. Yahiko Village adds that its raised floor is reached by steps with railings topped by giboshi finials.
Raised floor and stone corridor
On the side facing the norito hall, a raised floor one bay deep, with steps, projects forward. It is where the priests approach the deity, the end point of the axis that runs back from the worship hall. At the rear, stone steps and a stone corridor connect the offering hall to the main hall.
Placing a roof of the same shape just in front of the main hall means that, seen from the worship hall, two nagare-zukuri roofs rise one behind the other. It shows how Itō Chūta and his colleagues thought of the buildings as one continuous composition.
Seeing it
The Yahiko Shrine Offering Hall lies behind the worship hall and is not open to visitors. Those who take part in a formal prayer inside the worship hall face its raised floor beyond the norito hall, but photography and recording inside the worship hall are not allowed.
From the front of the worship hall, look beyond the gabled roof of the norito hall to find the curved nagare-zukuri roof of the offering hall, matching the main hall behind it.
