The talisman office opposite the ablution pavilion

The Yahiko Shrine Talisman Office (彌彦神社神符授与所, Iyahiko Jinja Shinpu Juyosho) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 building at Yahiko Shrine built for issuing shinpu talismans and amulets, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0024).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a footprint of 41 square metres. It stands on the right before the point where the main approach turns towards the Second Torii Gate, facing the ablution pavilion. It has a tiled gabled roof and Funahijiki brackets; the copper-roofed pent around it was added later.

A gable end designed for the east approach

The Agency notes that the gable end was carefully composed with the east approach along the shrine garden in mind. The design took account not only of the front seen from the main approach but also of the side presented to people arriving by the other path.

Funahijiki are simple bracket arms set on top of posts, also used in the musicians' hall and the Sanshuden. Within this restrained vocabulary, it is the composition of the gable that gives the building its character.

Seeing it

The Yahiko Shrine Talisman Office faces the ablution pavilion and can be seen from outside at any time. The shrine says talismans, amulets and goshuin stamps are issued from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; which building is used may change, so check on site.

Approach from the east path to see the gable end the Agency singles out, and notice where the later copper pent meets the original tiled roof.
