A stone walkway between offering hall and sanctuary
The Yahiko Shrine Stone Corridor (彌彦神社石廊下, Iyahiko Jinja Ishirōka) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the stone passage that joins the main hall and the offering hall of Yahiko Shrine, built in 1916 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0014).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a stone structure 5.7 metres long and 3.6 metres wide. Its base is built up in 3 courses of stone, with a flight of 3 steps where it meets the line of the wicket gate in the mizugaki fence. Another 3 steps climb to the base of the main hall, and 5 to the rear door of the offering hall.
Roofed only for the transfer of the deity
The Agency notes that for the sengū ceremony, when the deity is moved, a temporary timber shelter was built over the corridor. The rest of the time it is an open stone walkway; only for the rite do the main hall and offering hall become one covered space.
The differing number of steps at each end takes up the difference in floor height between the two halls. Registering a stone walkway among the timber halls reflects how the whole precinct was valued as a single design.
Seeing it
The Yahiko Shrine Stone Corridor lies inside the mizugaki fence behind the offering hall and cannot be seen by ordinary visitors; the shrine offers no viewing.
From the front of the worship hall, the roof of the main hall shows beyond that of the offering hall. The stone corridor runs at ground level between them.
