Where the offerings are prepared
The Yahiko Shrine Sacred Food Hall (彌彦神社神饌所, Iyahiko Jinja Shinsensho) in Yahiko, Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, is the 1916 hall at Yahiko Shrine where food offerings for the deity are prepared, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1998/09/02 (number 15-0007). The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it the shrine's kitchen.
The Agency records a single-storey timber building with a copper-sheet roof and a footprint of 73 square metres. It stands behind the worship hall on the left, joined to the norito hall by a covered passage, and at its far end a stair leads down to the forecourt.
A palace-style front of lattice shutters
Under its hip-and-gable roof, the hall faces outward along its long side in the manner of a Heian-period palace. The four bays of the front are filled with shitomido, top-hinged lattice shutters, and a veranda with a Kōran railing runs in front. It is a refined face to give a building that is, in function, a kitchen.
On the other side of the worship hall, the attendants' hall was built to look almost the same, a matched pair framing the main axis of the shrine.
Seeing it
The interior of the Yahiko Shrine Sacred Food Hall is not open. It is seen from the forecourt in front of the worship hall, behind and to the left. Look for the row of lattice shutters and the long railing of the veranda.
Compare it with the attendants' hall on the right to see the pair, and note the covered passage by which offerings travel through the norito hall to the deity.
