About the Oishi Family Residence Water Collection Tank

The Oishi Family Residence Water Collection Tank (大石家住宅集水槽, Ōishi-ke Jūtaku Shūsuisō) is an early Showa (1926–1945) brick water tank north of the main house on the Oishi estate in Yane, Tanto-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.

The Oishi Family Residence Water Collection Tank stands west of the Inner Storehouse. Its lower part is a concrete basin measuring 1.4 metres wide, 0.93 metres deep front to back and 0.8 metres deep inside; on top sits a brick structure 1.4 metres square and 2.3 metres high. It covers 1.9 square metres and is counted as one structure rather than one building.

A private water supply

The Agency for Cultural Affairs presents the Oishi Family Residence Water Collection Tank as an example of a modern private water supply: a device for gathering and storing water for use on the estate. Among the 16 registered structures it stands out as the only piece of equipment rather than a building, gate or wall.

The Agency does not say where the water came from or where it went. Even so, a tank of brick and concrete set right beside the main house and the Inner Storehouse shows an early Showa farming household arranging its own water supply. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to look for

Look at its form. The brick upper part of the Oishi Family Residence Water Collection Tank is pierced at the bottom by an arch, so the piece reads as a square brick block 2.3 metres tall with a single rounded opening.

The materials are worth noticing too. The basin that holds the water is concrete, the structure above it is brick. Amid storehouses and timber buildings, it is one of the few structures on the estate made entirely of modern materials.
