About the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate (大石家住宅籾蔵東門, Ōishi-ke Jūtaku Momigura Higashimon) is an early Showa (1926–1945) gate and wall running east from the Unhulled Rice Storehouse on the Oishi estate in Yane, Tanto-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011.
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate starts from the line of posts on the storehouse's south face and runs east until it meets the wall of the Household Rice Storehouse. In the middle of its 4.0-metre length is an opening 1.3 metres wide fitted with a sliding door. The roof is gabled (kirizuma) and covered with pantiles, and gate and wall are registered together as one structure.
A gate that links two storehouses
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate is not a free-standing gate. It fills the gap between two storehouses, the Unhulled Rice Storehouse and the Household Rice Storehouse, with a wall and sets a doorway into it. Storehouse wall, gate wall and storehouse wall run on as one line.
The wall has a mortar-finished lower band with Shikkui plaster above, and on its south face the footing is of fieldstone laid in random courses (Ranzumi). The Agency for Cultural Affairs says it forms one continuous scene with the Unhulled Rice Storehouse, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to look for
Look at how the roof is placed. Rather than covering the whole wall, the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate has brackets projecting over only the two bays at its east end, carrying a short gabled roof. Covered and open stretches sit side by side in a single wall.
Note, too, that the doorway has a sliding door rather than a swinging one. The white plaster of the upper wall matches the storehouse beside it; only the lower band differs, mortar here against the storehouse's boarding.
Visiting the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate stands inside the estate among the storehouses and is not open. It is probably difficult to see from outside the grounds.
