About the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse (大石家住宅籾蔵, Ōishi-ke Jūtaku Momigura) is an earthen-walled storehouse built in 1886 south of the Rice Storehouse on the Oishi estate in Yane, Tanto-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2011. Momi is rice still in its husk.
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with its ridge running north to south, measuring 5.6 metres by 4.1 metres (Ketayuki × Harima) with a building area of 33 square metres, under a gabled (kirizuma) roof of pantiles. It was refitted in the early Showa period (1926–1945).
A storehouse with an L-shaped forebuilding
The distinctive part of the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse is the two-storey forebuilding (Kuramae) on its east front. It turns off the main body at a right angle (Kaneore), and the main roof is simply carried down over it.
The storehouse sits on a base of irregular stones laid in random courses (Ranzumi), with a lower band of overlapping weatherboards and Shikkui plaster above. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it stands beside the gable-fronted Rice Storehouse and gives the outer face of the estate its variety. It was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property for its contribution to the historic landscape.
What to look for
Look at the bent outline of storehouse and forebuilding together. The roof sweeps down from the main gable to cover the forebuilding, holding two spaces under one continuous slope.
Its neighbours complete the picture. The east–west Rice Storehouse adjoins it on the north, and from the line of its south-face posts the wall of the Unhulled Rice Storehouse East Gate runs east to meet the Household Rice Storehouse. The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse sits at the hinge of the estate's group of rice stores.
Visiting the Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse
The Oishi Family Residence Unhulled Rice Storehouse is part of a private home, and the interior is not open. It stands deep within the grounds, so the forebuilding is probably hard to see from the road.
